HILLS

Lunchbox Mountain - 2022

Seashore Hill - 2022

I want to make hills - a hill I can hold, a hill I can hug. A softer mountain, more approachable but just as satisfying to climb. A mound of something great, little parts working together to create a whole. Hills are reverse holes. They rise up out of the ground, waiting to hold and be held.

The hill is round and holistic, a motif from my childhood and closeness to Appalachia. Big hills, little hills, flat hills, green hills, all depicting imagery from personal memories. A hill is protected in its shape. It’s tall and proud, yet humble and safe; old and worn away compared to the newness of a Mountain. Paintings of domestic images wash away against the form of the ever-steady hill, which erodes slowly over time. A solitary hill can loom in importance, but a field of hills is rolling, rhythmic, idyllic. Functional motifs in the hills reference the vessel and a connection to the hand. A dainty handle on a heavy ceramic hill alludes to the precarious and often untrustworthy nature of our memories. It’s silly and sweet how even the biggest, most cherished memories can be carried around in a bottle, a lunchbox, or a purse.

Wrestling and Disrobing (Just Friends)
2023

Three stout hills about a pair of best friends who can’t get enough of each other. Laying in the grass, leaning on each other, fighing, playing, sharing.  It’s an iterative experience, a story told in a reduced palette, then told again on the other side.

A Hill To Dine On
2023

One Hill holds an array of strange treats. Steam buns showered in chives, ladles of mustard, cut carrots and fried enoki, eggs swimming in thick slices of tomato, glasses of green drink, a tub of chili oil and a mystery of blanched greens and garlic. It’s delicious and 家常菜 (home-style cooking) piled onto plates laced with loving cobalt lines. On the other side of the hill, two friends enjoy a pb&j with chips and condiments from a lunch bag packed with just as much love. Oh the importance of food and friends!! What a joy to share a meal on top of a hill!
